The Intel Core 2 outperforms the AMD chip by a wide margin.

For performance, the Intel line is the way to go at the moment for notebooks (and desktops too actually).
The Turion X2 56 is about US$263.00
The cheapest Core Duo , the T2300 is US$241.00 and the T2500 is US$294.00.
You can see for yourself how the performance numbers scale with the price, and it would be difficult to find a reason to purchase the AMD Turion processor, as the T2300 is cheaper and faster. Of course, overall notebook performance does depend on several factors however you would be hard pressed to find an AMD based notebook with a configuration that you could not match with an Intel processor.

You can basically ignore this review; if you read on, you will find that Tom’s Hardware (which used to be a reputable review site) has not compared these processors in remotely similar systems; the Intel is running on a custom built desktop MoBo with a dedicated Video Card (x800), dedicated graphics RAM, and mains power (i.e. for all purposes a desktop, not laptop, system). The AMD is running on a stock notebook system, with NO video card at all (integrated), no dedicated VRAM, etc. (i.e. a notebook, what the other one SHOULD have been also). This is the epitome of an apples/oranges comparison… let’s compare an Intel desktop to an AMD notebook and see who wins! Also, the comparison includes the high-end core 2 duo chips (up to 2ghz) but NOT the high-end Turion 60 chip, which is 2.0 ghz and therefore much more comparable to the core 2 duo’s that they chose. Instead they compared the high-end Core 2 Duos (2.0ghz+, 4m cache, expensive) to the low-end Turions (1.6/1.8, 256/512k cache, cheap) instead of comparing similar chips. There are also no comparisons on other specs, like power usage, graphics performance, access times, games (how’d that one get left out?), battery life, overclocking performance, multitasking performance (dual core’s main advantage), price, etc. Wait for a better review, that reviews comparable-speed processors on identical systems, without any of this apples/oranges BS.

Also, no comparison on 64-bit apps; considering that the intel “64-bit” processors are just like the old 32’s expect with a 64-bit extension, not true 64-but chips (like amd has been making for years), I think this would make a big difference. You may wish to read the forums on Tom’s Hardware for this review; the general consensus there is to wait for a real comparison with identical systems to eliminate all of the other variables, and benchmarks in multitasking, 64-bit apps, games, power consumption, etc. as mentioned above.

I personally love AMD processors, had use Athlon before compared to Intel processors their perform better, infact much better.
But reviews around the net says Core 2 duo is leading cpu in market now.
I dun understand how the X2 being 64 bit dual core processor can lost out to C2Duo which is 32 bit dual core.

I am considering buying a new laptop for multiple uses, including some gaming.
All else being equal, which of these performs better:
– AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-64(2.2GHz/1MB)
+ – 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
or
– Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)
+ – 512MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
This is the only thing that separates the 2 notebooks I’m thinking about…

Well..I would love to give advice on the Turion vs Core 2 Duo. I have not seen any other sites that performed a head to head comparison however. And we don’t have the resources currently to go out and purchase or obtain a Turion based notebook and a similar Core 2 Duo Notebook. My response will have to be based on the experience with the Desktop processors of which there is a wealth of benchmark comparisons available. I would go for the Core 2 Duo. You noted that system has more memory for the videocard as well, which will help in the latest games. However, in any case, that 7600 Go won’t be running games such as Oblivion, or Supreme Commander to say nothing of Crysis etc. at phenomenal framerates. So if you are thinking of purchasing that notebook as a desktop replacement or to play games, then the 7600 isn’t going to meet your needs regardless of what processor you mate it with. You may find that a better choice will be to save money on the Graphics Card in the notebook by going with an onboard graphics chip, and investing in an Asus XG station to provide external graphics power in a Desktop Replacement environment. If you choose to go this route then it becomes purely academic what processor is in the machine, and you should err on the side of cost. The Turion married to an external graphics solution will probably perform the same at higher resolutions as a Core 2 Duo with an external graphics solution. I am assuming, of course, that your purpose for purchasing a separate 7600 Go instead of an integrated graphics solution, is because you want to play games on this notebook.

AMD holds it own with the duo. The acer 5000 is stormer and shows that it is the hardware mix that is important. Also on the Intel side you will find their front bus is lower than the Turion. I have an aversion to Intel so whatever I will stick with AMD

if the price is approximately the same, (or makes no difference to you), I’d go with the intel in that configuration. double the VRAM and 4x the L2, seems like a better bet, regardless of the exact processor. one thing I’m not seeing in your specs is the HDD speed (5400/7200/10000 RPM) and buffering, so be sure to check those.
the exact performance differences between competing chip models are really not a huge deal. saying that on a forum like this may seem sacrilegious, but in the long run, very few consumer-end tasks find the CPU to be the most pertinent bottleneck. if you’re encoding video or running millions of scientific calculations, then you need to ponder on such matters. likewise if your an overclocker, in which case you read the white papers and make your choice. if your one of the rest of us (regular geeks with less-than-super powers), either choose by price or by gut (brand loyalty). the folks above are right when it comes to benchmarks; very rarely do you see honest comparisons, and the further you dig, the more you realize that you’ll never agree with the test environment or the metrics.

All I know is (I’m not too updated with little things) my friend had an Acer AMD Turion (Somewhere in 2005 for £600)and had Linux, Oracle, and we played a movie w/out a single hitch. I pressed ctrl+alt+del and 42 processes were running. I was stunned. Mine is an Intel P4 Toshiba Satellite A30 (bought in 2003 for £800)and trust me, its an absolute crap (not that bad but pagefile errors/blue screens/too much of load etc etc). I must say I will go for AMD because I don’t care about little gadgets. From a customer/consumer perspective is a good performance, solid built and above all, “price”, So, I’m going for Acer AMD Mobile Turion 64×2 Dual Core TL-52 (2GB ram,160GB HDD,17″,1600MHz hyper transport) as its worth giving it a try after so many years of Intel coming up with craps. They had to change to higher technology only when AMD introduced 64-bit technology. Since Intel is more developed firm and have trillions to spend on, they can bring anything. But, I must say I’m in huge favour of AMD now. Especially when I saw basic single core 64-bit to be that good, there is no way 64×2 will be any lower than Core2Duo. Also, Turion will be announcing its 64-bit Quad processor not too late in future. AMD will beat Intel ……… Someday!!!
One question. Even though knowing that Vista takes 1GB of Ram, still there is no laptop available (at PC World) with 2GB ram with that many features for only £699. Any answers to that Intel??????

It doesn’t matter what processor you put on that laptop. With an integrated graphics card, or a 6150 you aren’t going to playing recent games at any rate.
The Intel Core2Duos are faster for the same price, typically.

To answer your question…I was told that most of todays games don’t take advantage of the dual core… you could have a x2 or duo running at 2.4 ghz and that would really be it. Like it was running on one core. I could be wrong seeing how that was the answer I got from a Computer Tech at Geek Squad

The information you have is correct. Very few games support Dual Core processors, in that the engines are not designed to take maximum benefit of multiple cores in the system. Some games may attempt to offload AI on a particular core, or maybe Physics, but very few of them are truly multi-processor compatible.
Crysis is supposed to be fully multiprocessor compatible and make full use of the other processors available. Supreme Commander currently runs a heck of a lot better with dual or quad processors as compared to just one.
When you consider purchasing a Dual or Quad Core processor though, you also need to think of Future Proofing your system. We definitely know that within the year new games are going to be released based on engines that do take advantage of multi core processors. We also know that general computing benefits from the Operating System being able to offload certain tasks to different processors, especially with the inefficiencies and poor behaviour of most modern programs. With a Dual Core processor you may not notice the bloat of McAffee Antivirus as much, for example, whilst on a single core machine the system will definitely feel slower with that AV application enabled.
The games are coming that will use Multi-Core more efficiently than current titles, and if you are purchasing a machine today you really should look toward going at least Dual Core if you intend to keep that machine for more than a year or two. You will see the benefits in games and other software within that timeframe.

Wow. That’s a tough call.
Looking at the system specs it’s really 6 of one, and half a dozen of the other.
I’m leaning toward the Nvidia card for hardware support and Shader level 3.0 support. But the Intel integrated and the 6150 cards basically perform the same. The 6150 may be just a few frames faster than the Intel but nothing that you would notice. Neither of these cards will really support any of the more modern gaming titles, and they both use System Memory ( that precious 512MB) for themselves (Up to 128MB of it). What I would recommend if you could afford it is increasing the memory to 1GB. Secondly, you shouldn’t put Vista on that machine as it will feel very sluggish with the less than 512MB of Ram you will end up with after the Graphics Card uses some.
In short, I may choose the Nvidia 6150.Have you shopped around from other manufacturers? How much are these going for in US$?

I have been reading all the arguments but it seems like that there is a real split of the intel and amd chips, from my knowledge isnt the amd chip chip slightly quicker, where simply data formations are processed, and also it seems like the intel equiviant to the intel C2D is always US$100+ more than AMD.
To Compare on a stiuation, notebook both with 2gb ram, on running a intel core 2 duo T7500 (2.2Ghz / 4mb cache) to the same speced AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-64 (2.2Ghz / 1mb cache), the AMD one being US$100 less than the AMD version, what would be a better deal??? coz i am having great dificualties deciding myself.

This review is a joke in that it is strictly favored towards Intel, why are there only 2 AMD unit’s compared against 7 Intel’s??? This review compares apples to oranges at the top of the scale. At the present there are several AMD models on top of what is reviewed here, what about the updated(May 2007)TL-56’s and the TL-60 on up? AMD is also a more durable and tweakable product and priced fairly instead of the price jack that comes with an Intel product. And remember the good old day’s with the 486sx/487sx scam from the good’ole boys from Intel, amongst others? It’s about supporting a particular company as well as purchasing a product-remember how AMD started, when I think of that I smile and shudder when I hear the name “Intel”.

what an argument. this is just fine, as i always said to my selves… who cares about processor and so forth. Everything is about your choice, so make it clear and make revisions throughly. I don’t know if intel much better from amd or vice versa. Cause as many would said that that thing is only a gadget and you can see their true performance by its owner.
Still remember my early day of intel celeron 1.2ghz with basic requirement of 512 sdram without any graphic cards. Imagine that i’ve played need for speed game series 1-3 with manual alterations. I’ve event manage to open 3 mp3 with 3 different player in addition of looking at video on basic WMp10. That spect i configure are event equel to my friend’s p4 of 2.0 ghz with same vram spec…
then it comes with failure of intel pD series with serious problem which i’m using right now while writing this comment. it sure sound loud and consumes power. Frankly said i’ve been bored for that and planning to buy a lappy for future attachment.
So now, I’m going for amd turion 64X2 with my near future lappy. Can’t wait to see what kind of manual alteration i can do to justify my perception of low specs with as equal to higher one. I might sound dumb and crazy but let it be cause it my life, my choice and my lappy. I don’t care other might says as long i love my machine – how about you?

hi friends, i’ve been eyeing an amd turion*2 TL-58, with 2GB RAM, 160GB hard disk drive, and a 128mb geforce 8400m GS with up to 384MB shared RAM. i just wanted to know if this will make the perfect machine for me. I’ll be using it mostly for programming. but sometimes,i like installing new games and playing around… i just wanted to know if i’ll be able to play games like age of empires 3, nfs pro street and call of duty 4 without the machine lagging. i’m not expecting a very high quality graphics but would have liked decent ones, with no lagging. thanks, hoping to hear from you soon… cheers

Hi. I just got off the phone with a case manager at Compaq looking to replace my laptop again. Just to explain where I’m coming from, I recently became the webmaster for a company after being part of the team that put together its website, and so I REALLY need a reliable laptop to work from. Now that my single processor Presario C303NR laptop clunked out a bit sooner than the 1 year warranty ran out they offered to replace it with the brand new (3 week old) C700T that came with a Dual Core Intel..MAN I must say what a piece of garbage that laptop was! Now, I don’t hate Intel so I’m not biased, as I lOVE Apples desktops that run on Intel (be it 64 bit yes), the Mac Pro is absolutely amazing, but I hate their iPods, and don’t care for the iPhone though it contributed to the world of PPCs pretty nicely…now though I think I might add Intels Dual Core processors to the list of what I don’t care for besides the iPod, iPhone etc.
The C700T replacement came with 1GB of memory and VISTA
and it ran slow and weird from when I got it, but once I put 2 pieces of software on it being Zonealarm and Kaspersky, it got even more laggy and just fell apart. I started getting blue screen errors, it started crashing all of over the place, I could not make a Recovery CD without it freezing. ALL of this nonsense happened on the same day I recieved it (I stayed up all night trying to make it act normal by tweaking the settings and such to not avail). SO I am in the process of getting ANOTHER replacement since that one was basically DOA. The replacement they are sending me is the HP Pavilion dv6700z, a different model all together, which gives you several options of a few different processors you could choose to put in it; AMDs Athalon, AMDs Turion, or even Intels Dual Core. I read that unless Intel is in an Intel Motherboard it doesn’t run well..THAT may be why I think people are reporting the nightmare scenarios just like I experienced myself. I figure they run so badly BECAUSE the motherboard they used (at least in the C700T) is NOT Intel. Which processor did I choose? If I listened to sales reps and tech support at Compaq I would have gone with the Intel, BUT based on what I saw at Cnet in regards to their comparison between AMD Turion vs Intels Dual Core where AMD completely SMASHED Intel, what I saw at other places, and what I saw here in the comment section I decided to go with the Turion. I’ll let you know how it goes:)

Nice to see the entries. I just ordered a Turion based laptop. The article AND the comments to it were pretty useful. I still haven’t got my laptop delivered yet. After reading the article AND the comments, I think most of my fears/ reluctances are alleviated.

Bcoz, I already test my laptop (AMD TURION64 X2 vs my friend laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo) which in this case both spec are identical (so i think i freely not to give the brand).
From the beginning, mine was lost in every aspect. And this is the story goes. after 2 hours, i decide to make another test and guess what happen ? AMD64 X2 (mine) are WIN mostly at whole aspect.
My question is…… HOW DARE TO PUT COMPARISON LIST LIKE THAT !!!.

intel copyied amd’sblueprints for the dual core, dont that say anything, currentlyintel is using the AMD way, because they couldnt figure out how to do it on their own,,,

I have an AMD Turion 64 in this computer… single core. My computer at my old job was a core 2 Duo. Without any diagnostic tools, I would EASILY say that this single-core Turion out-performed the Core 2 Duo on almost every count. Not graphics, because this comp has a POS card and the old work box had an ATI Radeon x1400m.. nice chip. In terms of processing power, the AMD always beat out Intel.

i have started my tafe corse and i am wanting to buy a new laptop so i can practise my CAD and sketchup skills on a laptop and to use generally as a notebook.
I am no pro with laptops, so could you please could you recommend the minimum requriements i should get in a laptop to support my work comfortably and suggest to get the intel core 2 duo or the AMD Turion 64X2???

I love AMD processors. They perform better. Infact lots of people argued with me when I purchased my first AMD Athlon processor for my desktop. they used to tell me that it will get burn up, it gets heat up easily but i never found any problem with the processor.
its like indian mentality…..once they start buying maruti, every one loves maruti….once they start buying honda city, everyone goes for honda city…..thats all it is about.
so lets change the world and lets see if how other things performs.
I have just bought AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Tech Compaq Persario with Nvidia GEForce graphics and 1 GB RAM. It is doing better than Intel’s one…

See the pages 8 and 9, the Intel Core 2 Duo is mounted on a DESKTOP mobo and not on a Labtop.
Even if they tried to compensate this difference by using an Old ATI Radeon X600 .

Comparing the worst and cheap of AMD to the best and expensive of Intel what’s the goal?
Misleading consumers and insulting their intelligence?
I would be really interested to see what would be the results with the AMD Turion 64 X2 TL 60 and 64 and at what price compared to those expensive Intel Core 2 Duo.

After reading many reviews i saw that a lot of people where talking about the intel processor as the best and faster; so at the end i decided to go with an amd turion 64×2 2ghz. I always owned intel processors and this was something new for me and, you know what? Buy an AMD next time: cheaper and mostly same performance. Don’t be fooled by people that don’t really know what they are talking about. Many reviews aot there just say what it- s simply more convenient, not what’s true.

hi. i own an hp notebook with an amd turion 64 x 2 tl – 64 2.2 ghz processor and all i could say is that i am very satisfied with its performance. i could personally vouch for its reliability in perforning rigid tasks such as rendering in both autocad and 3dsmax.

Turion 64 X2 is way better than core 2 duo in terma of architechture & performance especially for gaming(with an ati or nvidia graphic card) & for vista 64 bit..Ive used both..n the turion neva hangs or freezes..n applications lik 3dsmax run gr8 on the turion.. amd 64 bit processors beat intel anyday

i dont know much about all written here.. all i know is all my friends who goes for games will choose AMD n they said if its not for games, is for normal used(internet, video, music,etc…)go for intel..
SO…. I DO THINK AMD IS BETTER COZ I M HAVING A AMD LAPTOP N ITS GREAT.. its temperature is higher n battery run out faster, but i guess it is bcoz of its great perfomance NEEDS energy 🙂

I am considering buying a new laptop for multiple uses, including some gaming.
All else being equal, which of these performs better:
– AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-64(2.2GHz/1MB),4 GB DDR2
+ – 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
or
– Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)

This is the only thing that separates the 2 notebooks I’m thinking about…

This is a very nice processor http://bit.ly/catC6m for the money. Much, much faster than my other pentiums and athlons, and for only 50-60 bucks, seems like a no bainer.
I can edit photos/video, surf web and burn CD’s/DVD’s with no problems (processor in the 50% to 60 range). Even during heavy multitasking the radiator stays cool to the touch with the stock fan, not even warm at all.
My setup:

– Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 XMS3 4 GB PC3-12800 Core i5 Memory Kit (yes it works on AMD systems too)
