Notebooks – Asus XG External Graphics Station Available at OEM Next Month

4033_xg_station_1.jpgAsus has released some new information on it’s new XG External Graphics station. We mentioned it before here in our blog, and since then a few features have been rounded out and better explained. The XG Station will ship to OEMs, and sadly will not be available at Retail. They also are not selling the systems without an included Asus Graphics Card. So you will need to purchase a bundle, the XG Station and the Graphics card, although there is nothing stopping you from swapping out that graphics card for a more powerful one down the line.

The Station connects to your Notebook’s ExpressCard slot and allows your laptop which may have mediocre integrated graphics card technology, to make use of the full features and speed of the external graphics card. The primary application for this would seem to be mobile warriors who tether their notebooks at times at a desk to play games. So you’re dinky laptop with an Intel integrated adapter but 8hours of battery life can be used to play Oblivion at full resolution and detail when docked to the XG Station.

The station will offer Dolby simulated audio over Headphones (only a headphone jack included) as well as overclocking of the included graphics card via a knob on the front of the unit. This only alters the GPU core clock though, not the memory timings. The display shows the current Frames Per Second,GPU Temperature, and Fan Speed.

I’m thinking whether this capability could be used for Desktop machines. Imagine simply purchasing a single unit and plugging it into your desktop to expand your graphics capabilities, rather than having to dig into the internals of your system and pull out the existing graphics card to install a new one. As technology advances you can purchase an External SLI solution etc. This should also allow system vendors to reduce the size of computers as the hefty graphics card solutions can now be placed outside the box. Of course, now you are replacing one box with two, but that shouldn’t be too bad for most users.

  2. What are OEMs? And is there any way to get a station from one of these OEMs?

  4. Original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, is a term that refers to containment-based re-branding, namely where one company uses a component of another company within its product, or sells the product of another company under its own brand. OEM refers to the company that originally manufactured the product.

So it just means it will be even longer until we can get them because they have to be sold to the other companies first.

  5. Hi, Nobody ever says if this thing is available yet, or when, or how much.
    so…..
Is this thing available yet. If not, any idea when it will be. Any clues as to how much it will cost.

    Cheers.
